What makes a hero? Is it plunging into the mouth of danger to pluck from it's ivory teeth the babe of a woman unknown? Is it laying down life and limb in the name of ideal, of beauty, of truth?

No! It is NOT! A hero is..

...wait for it....

. . .Akane! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you may not have known it, you may have overlooked her, but in your midst has been a Hero of greatest standing. She is a hero in the Herculean vein, the like of which has not been seen since the arrow that pierced the heel of Achilles rid the world of his golden heroism.

What has she done to merit such undiluted adulation? You may well ask. You may well wonder in your soul at her virtue.

The story is not of much length, and if you will pause a moment you may well hear a tale to shake your heart with pity.

My family, having told me to return from distant Brooklyn to wait in our abode for their arrival and from thence should we three (the ignorant and indignant son and absent sister excepted) sally forth into the world (specifically Edgewater) to patronize fair Julie Taymor's latest film. Alas! Upon this weary, work-worn traveller's end, she did find that they had paused in far Manhatten and would that she returned post haste. Alas again! Alas! I walked till my feet ran red with my efforts and yet hurried on further. Exiting the dark subway, I found my parents' messages piled upon each other to overflowing on my phone. And did they still call and re-call as I attempted to purchase my own tickets. And yet, still tragedy. They entered the theater thoughtlessly and I, poor unfortunate, was left with only a sign bearing the fateful words: Sold Out. Alas, my bleeding feet! Alas, poor fool! I could walk no further, no, and yet hobbled to a bookstore where I fed my misery with expensive fashion magazines. Then did I bethink me, I knew of a hero who could save me from my distress! I called upon brave Akane and she was by my side within the hour and leading me away from scenes of misery and lifting my faltering spirit. She, knowing of a different film by which we might amuse ourselves, did find us a theater and we had a thrilling evening.

So, those who know the despair of vain effort and bleeding feet unheeded need look no further than this glorious hero, sprung anew from the pages of Homer and the like.

PS -- Thanks again, Akane! You ROCK!
